Brands and the Man

What is more important, Brand or the Person behind it?

In a journey to understand the current and future of the world of business I have been studying the dot com businesses for a while.

There are two elements that emerge the Brand and the Man. Which came first can be a question. We often see brands but don’t always associate the humans behind it. The internet produces new types of brands and people. Both largely driven by perceptions of trust, reliability and usefulness.

Unfortunately it is not a great leveler. To be successful you need a combination of three things. Knowledge, Time and Entrepreneurship.  None of these are static qualities.

There are no SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) … this is a term to assume expertise on only one aspect which is pretty much useless without a balance of the other two. So you need all three. Check out the successful ones and you will see what I mean.

Knowing the achievers helps …

Of the three elements knowledge can be bought or learnt it requires capital investment. Large business therefore succeed.

Time alas is in not in anyone’s hands.

Entrepreneurship is akin to creative knowledge … can be learnt to an extent, and mastered over time, but can not be bought. Sure you can hire a team and pay them salaries … it will revert to gaining their knowledge.  To use them will be your entrepreneurship.

I think the most important aspect in the internet is to understand the way it works. This is where those who graduated with IT as a subject or mathematicians gain an edge. Alas they too have to get the other skills.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) in simple terms is grappling with the search engines like Google, Bing, Ask to put your site in front of searching readers. They follow algorithms and look for words that match the search.

In other words the website, its content and reputation is determined by the search engines. A bit autocratic if think about it. There are many who dance to their tunes while you spend money dressing up you site for the dance.

My determination to grapple with the beast … guys I am not technical in the sense

But this is a beast you can grapple with on the side while you focus on content.

Be yourself and that is the best content.

I have embarked on a SEO log which may be of some use. SEO is like rust and security … requires constant vigil.
